In the second half of the 60-ies of XX century, the situation with the congestion of airports worsened due to the growth of air traffic. The increase in the frequency of departures was limited by the capabilities of air traffic control services. To solve this problem, aviation experts have proposed two ways:
- the creation of supersonic passenger aircraft;
- the creation of large passenger aircraft.
the Boeing Company chose the second option and offered the airlines a draft aircraft, "model 747", which could carry more than 350 people at a distance of more than 8000 km. The scheme chosen by the designers of the company became characteristic of the entire family of aircraft "747".  Among the features of the aircraft:
- the upper passenger cabin increased comfort;
- cabin with two aisles between the rows of seats (for the first time in the world);
- four main landing gear.
Officially, the development of the aircraft began in 1966. after signing a contract with pan American for the supply of 25 aircraft. The first flight of the experimental aircraft modification "747-100" took place on February 9, 1969, and in December of the same year, the first aircraft was delivered to the customer and certified. During the release of the aircraft Boeing company has consistently created several modifications that formed a whole family of aircraft "747".
In 1985. the company began working on the modification of "747-400". The new aircraft had an elongated upper passenger cabin, increased by 3.66 m wingspan, more powerful engines. The installation of a modern digital avionics system made it possible to reduce the crew to two people, and the use of new alloys reduced the weight of the structure by 2.7 tons. the First flight of the experimental aircraft of this modification took place on April 29, 1988. and in January 1989, the aircraft was certified.
Currently, the 747 family has been in operation for more than 30 years. During this time, the aircraft has become a symbol of comfort and reliability in passenger aviation, and its characteristic silhouette is known all over the world.
