the Most common model of "Harrier" in service with the Royal air force, is the Harrier GR.Mk7. To the cooperation of the British firm WAE and the American McDonnell Douglas led to the need to improve the limited range and payload of aircraft GR.Mk.3, while the us marine corps required an aircraft capable of replacing the aging A-4 Skyhawk. The resulting aircraft was designed to meet the needs of the air force of both countries. The American version was designated AV-8B Harrier. British Harrier GR.Mk.5 design was different from its predecessor. Wider wings made of composite materials allowed to increase the lifting force, as a result of which the aircraft could take an additional 900 kg of fuel. The onboard equipment was improved, a multifunctional indicator with a digital map of the area and an infrared sensor were installed. On the wings are additionally placed two pylons for suspension of AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles. For GR.Mk.5, first entered service in November 1988, followed by a version of HarrierGR.Mk.7. The aircraft installed a new radar, a new computer and improved fire control system. 25-mm gun Aden replaced 30-mm guns. Turbojet engine Rolls-Royce Pegasus Mk.103 replaced by on Rolls Royce Pegasus Mk.105.  the first flight took place on 29 November 1989.
