"Wooden miracle" - so called Havilland Mosquito, elegant and efficient aircraft, made almost entirely of wood.

By the end of the 30s, when work on the mosquito began, metal was available, but engineers foresaw that in the future war alloys would become a valuable resource, in addition, a light wooden aircraft would be able to surpass the speed of its heavier opponents. The design mainly used balsa wood with birch leaves on both sides. Initially, the Mosquito was designed as a high-speed bomber without weapons, but realizing the potential of the aircraft, many other versions were released.

FB Mk.VI debuted in the spring of 1943: fighter-bomber had four 7.7 mm machine guns in the nose, four 20mm guns and the ability to carry four 500 pound (226 kg) bombs. High speed and range allowed the use of FB Mk.VI for a variety of tasks including raids on important targets and the German infrastructure in the rear. There is an opinion that before the advent of the Messerschmitt Me262, the Germans had a worthy opponent of the British "Mossie".
