Additional Information
During the first half of World war II Messerschmitt Bf109 E was the main fighter of the German air force. The modification of the E-4 engine was installed Daimler Benz DB 601Aa 1,100 HP the aircraft was armed with two 7.9 mm machine guns in the nose and 20mm cannon in each wing. In addition, it was planned to install a 20mm cannon for firing through the propeller shaft, but the modification was unsuccessful. Thanks to the excellent acceleration and dive performance, the e-fighters outperformed the Hawk Hurricane RAF and were approximately equal to the Spitfire in the Battle of Britain. However, with a flight distance of 560km, the E-4 was limited to 15 minutes of combat in the skies over Britain. This fact limited the ability to cover the bombers, which led to large loss. As a result, the Luftwaffe's plans to bomb Britain until its defeat were thwarted. To smooth out this drawback, the aircraft were equipped with an additional fuel tank for 300 liters. The improved version bore the designation E-7, and was first deployed in late 1940. After the end of the Battlefield for Britain E-4/7 were relegated in North Africa. With the establishment of the release of Bf109 version F outdated modification E-4/7 began to be removed from service, but some veterans continued to use their E-4/7, mainly to support ground forces until the summer of 1942.
