Additional Information

After the end of world war II, the US air force managed to get from the prisoners of German engineers advanced technology in the field of Aeronautics. One of them was the analysis of the work of Dr. Alexander Lippish at the Delta wing. Based on this information, Douglas manufactured the F4D Skyray, the only us Navy Delta wing interceptor used.

Douglas was awarded a contract to design and test two prototypes in December 1948. The first prototype first took off in January 1951. Soon the first flight made and the second prototype. The aircraft set a maximum speed record of 1,211 km/h. After many modifications and improvements, the first production F4D-1 took to the air in June 1954.

Although the Skyray has never been used in combat, several world records and deployment during the Taiwan Strait Crisis have proven the effectiveness of the F4D as an interceptor.
