Among several variants of this famous fighter, the P-51 modification "D" is considered the most perfect, it was the first Mustang with "Bubble canopy" (a form of glazing "Bubble"). P-51D was built more than all the Mustangs combined, with the conveyor descended 9603 aircraft. American squadrons based in England could now cover the bombers throughout the route.
Between the modification of the "D" and the other versions, there are a few significant differences. First, the aircraft's armament increased from four to six large-caliber machine guns. Underwing pylons were reinforced to install additional fuel tanks or bombs. The last battle of the Mustang took place in 1956, when Israel used Spitfires, Messerschmitts and Mustangs in a series of middle East conflicts.
