In 1943, the US air force launched massive air raids on Germany, using the UK-based B-17 and B-24. Bombers carried the heaviest losses and there was a need for fighters capable of supporting flights over the territory of the enemy. A small number of modifications Spitfire and P-38 Lightning were able to provide support no further than to Paris, leaving the bombers without cover for the rest of the route. With the development of the P-47, this problem was solved. P-47 was the first single-seat fighter equipped with a supercharger, which allowed him to fly at the same altitude with bombers. Thunderbolt made a lot of pilots. Bomber pilots suffering from German interceptors noted that the presence of the P-47 was a huge relief.
