Fi 156 Storch was a light aircraft made at the request of the Luftwaffe for communication needs. The aircraft had a very short distance required for takeoff and landing. The design had such practical features as a folding wing for easy transportation and cushioning landing gear for use with unprepared soils. The aircraft was used for many tasks, including communications, tactical intelligence, medical evacuation, used in a daring operation to rescue the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. Erwin Rommel also used Fi 156 extensively for reconnaissance in North Africa.
