Supermarine Spitfire MK.Vb Float Plane version of the Supermarine Spitfire fighter plane, developed in 1942, based on Mk VB airframe using floats designed by Supermarine (as Supermarine Type 355). Conversion by Holland Aircraft, with four-bladed propeller on Merlin 45 engines, tropical filter and additional ventral fin. First flew on October 12, 1942, and then was fitted with an additional dorsal fin and Aero-Vee tropical filter. Two more conversions of the Mk VB from Holland in 1943; all three to Egypt in late 1943 and flew out of the Great bitter lake, but without operational use. One Supermarine Spitfire LF Mk IXB, with Merlin 66 and a four-bladed propeller (type 385), similarly converted by Folland, first flew on June 18, 1944, later moved to the ground plane.Data for Mk VB floatplane: top speed, 324 mph (521 km / h) at 19,500 feet (5944 m).
