Although the pilots got the most fame, for protecting Britain from Luftwaffe in the summer of 1940, they could never have done it alone. Many men and women from all over the Kingdom were engaged in ground handling aircraft, performing the necessary work on refueling, arming and servicing the famous fighters between combat missions.
This work became particularly dangerous during the Luftwaffe raids on RAF airfields. In addition to refueling and replenishing the Spitfire and hurricane ammunition with thousands of 303 caliber bullets, these people repaired damaged vehicles, started engines, helped pilots get into the cockpit and maintained the equipment in the best condition despite the feverish pace of the war.
Many were killed or wounded in bombings and raids, but they continued to do everything necessary to defend Britain, whether it was frost or the scorching sun
