Additional Information
Operation mercury, the battle of Crete, began on 20 may 1941 when German paratroopers landed on a Mediterranean island. The bloody battle lasted eleven days and ended with the capture of the island. Crete was a valuable Harbor for the British Navy and had runways for RAF bombers, its loss was very painful for the Allies. German Gebirgsjager (mountain troops) played together with the landing a very important role in the success of this operation. The fifth division of Gebirgsjager had a population of 15,000 and was landed on the island by air and sea. These troops were ideally suited for this operation due to light weapons and experience in the highlands. For action in the hot climate, the soldiers wore cotton shorts, which gives the figures a unique look. Another distinctive feature of these troops were hats with the emblem of Edelweiss and typical mountain shoes.
