the Merkava is the main battle tank used by the Israel defense forces. The tank began development in 1973 and entered military service in 1978, was deployed four main versions of the tank. It was first widely used in 1982 in the Lebanese war. The name "Merkava" was derived from the original name of the IDF development programme.
It is designed for quick repair of combat damage, survivability, economy and off-road performance. Following the model of modern self-propelled howitzers, the turret Assembly is located closer to the rear than in most major battle tanks. This gives additional protection from frontal attacks.
