Neubaufahrzeug (usually abbreviated to NbFz) is translated from German as "new build machine". The design assignment with General information was given on July 13, 1932. The tank was developed under the designation "machine of new construction" as the Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany to produce weapons. The contract was transferred to Rheinmetall-Borsig and Krupp-Gruson. The original proposal was based on the experience of "Großtraktor ", the design was influenced by such contemporaries as the British Vickers A1E1 and Soviet T-35. NbFz was designed as "Durchbruch Kampfwagen" (breakthrough tank). The main turret had a 37mm gun with armor-piercing shells to combat armored vehicles and a 75mm KwK short-barrel with high-explosive shells to combat fortifications and anti-tank guns. In turn, the small towers mounted with machine guns to combat infantry.
