Heavy is tanks (abbreviation "is" means "Joseph Stalin") were developed in 1943 to replace the outdated kV tanks. The is-1 tank, armed with an 85mm gun, was adopted in September 1943, but it soon became apparent that the tank's armament was not powerful enough to combat the latest German armored vehicles. At the end of 1943 was developed and tested a new modification of the tank, armed with a 122 mm gun, called the is-2. The new tank came to the front in early 1944 and participated in the battles of the final period of the great Patriotic war. Is-2 was rightfully considered one of the strongest heavy tanks of its time.
