the Israeli Kfir fighter (lion Cub) is an all-weather multi-purpose combat aircraft based on a modified Dassault Mirage 5 with Israeli avionics and an Israeli-made General Electric J79 engine.
Kfir entered service with the IAF in 1975 and was first assigned to the 101st "First Fighter" squadron. Subsequently, the new aircraft received several other squadrons. Kfir not long remained in the role of aircraft air superiority, in 1976 the United States began to supply the F-15 Eagle.
the First combat use of the aircraft is dated November 9, 1977, during which Israel attacked the tel Azia training camps in Lebanon. The only air victory took place on June 27, 1979, when Kfir C2 shot down the Syrian MiG-21.
In the course of the Israeli war with Lebanon in 1982 (operation peace for Galilee). The IAF used the F-15 and F-15 to gain air superiority, leaving Kfir to attack ground targets. Soon C2 began to improve to the C7 version, making the aircraft more capable fighter-bombers. In the second half of the 1990s, Kfir was decommissioned after almost 20 years of use.
