One of the first serial monoplane fighters with retractable landing gear was the I-16, developed at OKB N. N. Polikarpova. The first flight of the aircraft took place on December 30, 1934.
Modification "type 28" with the M-63 engine, two ShVAK guns and the strengthened chassis was in production in 1939-1940
