From the very beginning, HSS-1 services have been widely used in rescue and disaster response operations. The S-58 had a chance to tow lost ships. Once the crew of "Sibet" found the passenger plane which has sat down on water and towed away it on shallow water. "Towing" ability of the machine was tested by sailors in experiments with mine trawls. In 1955, with the help of S-58 tried towing another helicopter flying on autorotation.
