F-100 was one of the first American aircraft to take part in the Vietnam war. It was used throughout the conflict. Although their participation was not as wide as F-105 thunderchief and F-4 phatom. F100 modifications D, F, and several C were actively used in the South of the country for air support and other tasks. Production of the F-100D began on July 7, 1955, and the first flight took place on January 24, 1956. Nine months after the first flight, they began to arm squadrons, replacing the outdated F84F Thunderstreak. Foreign deliveries began in late 1956, the aircraft was equipped with the US air force in Europe (USAFE), they were equipped with a squadron based in the French cities of ethene and Chaumont. The aircraft was also used at Itazuke airbase in Japan and in the far East. A total of 1274 F-100D was built.
