Development of strategic nuclear fleet required improvement of communication between submarines and the high command, for these purposes at the beginning of the 70th years Tu-142 Mr began to be developed. The aircraft is based on the Tu-142 frame and was used to provide communication between strategic submarines and command. The radar under the fuselage was removed and replaced with a long-range cable antenna. Unlike other "bears" Tu-142 Mr had a solid fairing antenna at the site of a typical nose glazing where the radar is located limited range, probably to compensate for the lack of "kite". Only a small amount of Tu-142 Mr was built.
