Lightning evolved from its original role as an interceptor into a quality strike fighter and reconnaissance aircraft. The first production Lightning modification F. 1 took off in October 1959, delivery began in the summer of 1960. The aircraft had a powerful radar and firestreak missiles with thermal guidance. The next modification F. 1A had the ability to refuel in the air and radio decimeter frequency. Option F. 2 was introduced in 1961 and had a long range, speed and practical ceiling as well as improved electronics and other innovations. F. 3 equipped with two Avon engines, red-Top missiles and the ability to install two wing fuel tanks entered service in 1964. F. 3A, later referred to as F. 6 was the result of recommendations to increase the capacity of the fuel tanks (almost twice) and the redesigned wing.
