Sputnik 1, the first artificial earth satellite, was launched into orbit on 4 October 1957. The code designation of the satellite is PS-1 (the Simplest Satellite is 1). The launch was carried out by the Sputnik launch vehicle (R-7) from the 5th research site of the Ministry of defense of the USSR "tyura-Tam" (later called the Baikonur cosmodrome).
