Dragoon regiments were the first (and before the appearance of cuirassiers in 1731 - and at all the only) units of regular cavalry in the Russian army. In Russian army at the beginning of XIX century the number of Dragoon regiments increased rapidly - from 11 regiments in 1803 to 36 in 1812, as a result of which in the war of 1812 Dragoons made up more than half of all Russian regular cavalry. Dragoons were armed with both cold and firearms, but the latter played a supplementary role. Basically, the Dragoons fought on horseback in a dense build, although in some circumstances they could dismount.
