Modernization of M1A2 tanks on the projects of the SEP family (System Enhanced Package – "Package of improved systems") has been carried out since the late nineties. The first version of the SEP project involved the use of reinforced frontal armor with uranium elements, the use of modernized sights with thermal imaging channels, the integration of the tank's electronics into the latest communication and control systems. Also there were some other changes when you save the greater part of components and assemblies.
M1 "Abrams" was the result of the third program to replace the tanks of the series "Patton". The first two T95 and MBT-70/XM803 failed. T95 had no superiority over the "Patton", while the MBT-70 and even its simplified model XM803, were too expensive and complex. Also, the concept of a low-ballistic gun-a missile launcher planned for installation on MBT-70/XM803 TANKS-did not justify itself. The development of the new tank, later designated the XM-1, began immediately after the closure of the HM803 programme at the end of 1971. To reduce the technological risk, the new tank was decided to be made according to the classical scheme with a crew of 4 people and with a high ballistics gun as the main weapon. The role of the latter were considered rifled 105-mm gun M68, British 110-mm rifled and German 120-mm smoothbore gun. 110-mm cannon shallows immediately as not having a significant advantage over the Variant of the 105 mm. with 120 mm considered risky, so it was decided to leave the gun M68 with the possibility of replacing the 120-mm. as the power plant was considered the American air-cooled diesel AVCR-1100 (planned for the MBT-70), German diesel water cooling DB1500 (later received the designation MB873) and the American gas turbine engine AGT-1500. The power of all engines was 1500 HP. Initially, the military preferred diesel, but in the late 1970s their sympathy shifted towards the GTE.
