In the 60-ies the main French ACS was 155-mm Mk F3 created on the basis of a light tank AMX-13. Extremely simple and easy ACS could not compete with modern American M109 and Soviet 2S1. In 70-e years, this situation could not continue, it required the creation of a new machine. The new howitzer was developed by GIAT Industries, in 1971 the concern released the first batch. AUF1 uses an upgraded OBT chassis AMX-30B, as a 155 mm howitzer gun with a barrel length of 39 calibers. The unit is equipped with a loading machine with a maximum rate of fire of 8 shots per minute, the average rate of fire is 6 shots per minute. The turret is equipped with a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun. The total length is 10.25 meters, width 3.15 meters, height 3.25 m, weight 43.5 tons. The crew consists of four people: commander, gunner, loader and driver.
Total produced 440 AUF1, ACS is in service with France, as well as exported to Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Kuwait. The 17-ton tank turret can be supplied separately and mounted on chassis available to the buyer, GIAT Industries demonstrated AUF1 on the T-72 chassis.
In the 90-ies the appearance of 155-mm ACS with trunks of increased length and a high level of information again led to the backlog of French artillery. In 1999, the French defence Ministry discussed with GIAT Industries the modernization of AUF1. After improvements, the object was named AUF1 TA. The abbreviation "TA" - "Tourelle ATLAS" means the installation of LMS "ATLAS" in the artillery module. The appearance of the tower has not changed , only three new antennas appeared on the roof. Body AUF1 TA modified to standard tank AMX-30B2, the engine was replaced by a multi-fuel diesel Renault Mack E9, installed new tracks with a parallel hinge. The replacement of the engine led to an increase in the height of the power compartment by 12 cm, as a result, the tower had to be raised by the same 12 cm.
In 2006, French peacekeeping forces with Leclerc tanks and howitzers AUF1 TA returned to Lebanon. This were the only fighting, in which applied this self-propelled gun. C 2008, since the adoption of the 155-mm howitzer Caesar the number of AUF1 in the French army has decreased significantly.
