Additional Information

With the advent of the jet aviation era, traditional air defenses, with a manual optical guidance system, low rate of fire and guidance speed, have become extremely ineffective against fast-flying targets at low altitudes. Therefore, in 1957, the development of a new type of rapid-fire ZSU with radar automatic guidance systems was started. Prototype of an was completed in December 1960, in October 1961 were completed factory tests and 5 September 1962 "Shilka" was adopted on weaponry. Serial production of ZSU was started in 1964. "Shilka" is armed with an automatic 23-mm Quad gun with a rate of fire of 3,400 rounds per minute. Radar allows you to fire in automatic mode, but you can switch to manual and semi-automatic option. ZSU is designed to defeat air targets at a range of up to 2.5 km and a height of 1.5 km. As well as against ground and surface targets at a range of up to 2 km. At the moment, "Shilka" is considered outdated due to the low characteristics of the radar station and the effectiveness of fire, but continues to be in service with Russia, Ukraine and a number of other countries. One of the latest applications of the ZSU is the Civil war in Syria, used by the Syrian army against ground targets of militants.
