In 1972, the US army introduced the M60 variant to support the existing M60A1 with a 105mm gun. The tanks have a common chassis but the M60A2 has received a low profile turret with a 152 mm gun capable of firing both large caliber projectiles and MGM-51 Shillelagh Anti-tank guided missiles. The new version was nicknamed "Zvezdaship" (spacecraft) for complex electronics.
the M60A2 was not used for long due to maintenance problems and the fact that the missiles were not able to penetrate heavily armored tanks on the other side of the iron curtain. M60A2 was transferred to the reserve, then, after a while, the tanks were deprived of its distinctive tower and converted into M60A3 or bridge layers AVLB
