For operation Sea lion (planned invasion of the UK), the command initially requested 180 submarine tanks. By 1 August 1940, 90 Panzer III c 37mm KwK, 10 Panzer III c 5cm KwK and 28 Panzer IV were ready, and 12 Sturmgeschutz were also available. 19 Aug 1940 a special Panzer offices were 152 48 Panzer III and Panzer IV. After the rejection of plans for "operation Sea lion" the most modified of the tanks was ranked as the 18th Panzer division. Tauchpanzer IVD has been modified for underwater use. Additional insulation was made, characteristic valves on the exhaust pipes were added, the gun and the machine gun were closed with a waterproof cloth, the surveillance devices of the mechanical drive were isolated by a metal partition. An inflatable rubber tube was used to isolate the ring of the tower.
