the T-40 was in many ways an improvement on the T-37 and T-38. Spring suspension of the T-38 was replaced by the more modern torsion bar type with four road wheels. Instead of riveted bodies T-37 and T-38, the new tank used a fully welded structure. Welded conical tower helped to strengthen the reservation, still remained very weak. The tank was armed with a 12.7 mm heavy DShK machine gun, much more combat-ready than the 7.62 mm DT mounted on the T-38.
