Additional Information

the M3 Lee (English version — M3 Lee) was an American medium tank during world war II. The number of sources found the name of the M3 "General Lee". Index "M3" denotes the third serial number of modification of American tanks. The tank is named after the legendary American General Robert Edward Lee, commander-in-chief of the southern army in the us Civil war. For the British army was released a batch of M3 tanks with a modified tower, which was called M3 "Grant" (English version — M3 Grant) in honor of the American General Ulysses Simpson Grant, an outstanding commander of the army of the northerners. In the Soviet units arrived on lend-lease tanks M3 "Li", which, jokingly, called the BM-6, that is, "mass grave for six."

the Development of the "M3 "Li" tank began at the end of 1939, when it became clear that its predecessor – the M2 tank was morally outdated and did not meet the requirements put forward by the modern battle at that time. Tank M2 was trying to equip a 75-millimeter guns, but this idea was not successful. Therefore, it was decided to develop a new improved model based on the M2 tank, which immediately received the name of the MOH "General Lee". For the three months the designers have created the project documentation of the new machine, and created a prototype of the new tank. After passing field tests, the machine was put into production in June 1941 and was produced before the M4 "Sherman" tanks until December 1942. The production of M3 tanks was organized at the newly built Chrysler plant in Detroit.
