Because of its reliability and ease of repair, and because its engine needed no refrigerant, the German Kubelwagen proved particularly effective on the burning African desert during world war II. At the request of various divisions in North Africa for a vehicle suitable for the desert, from 1942 entered into mass production sports tire Continental. Two types of airbags were used, a corrugated and unbound version. Since the tires were wider than normal tires, a spacer was added to the hood of the car to raise the height of the spare cushion attachment. Some of the type 82 airbags were even used in Italy after the fighting in North Africa ceased in may 1943.
