Additional Information
In 1941, Porsche created a prototype tank with a number of radical innovations, such as a hybrid engine. In 1943, the tanks were converted into Ferdinand self-propelled units armed with 8.8 cm PaK 43 L/71 installed in a large angular cabin. During the battle of Kursk, these machines have demonstrated excellent firepower, punching the armor of T-34 and KV at a considerable distance, but because of the low mobility and the unreliability of many Ferdinands broke down on technical faults. In 1944, 50 surviving self-propelled guns underwent modifications, including the installation of a machine gun and a commander's turret, the upgraded machines were called "elephant" (Elephant). Elefants participated in the fighting on the Italian and Eastern front, some cars fought until the end of the war involved in the Battle of Berlin.
