the Soviet army used the chassis of the is-2 heavy tank to create the ISU-152 – a self-propelled machine designed to combat German tanks such as the Tiger. This heavy self-propelled gun was first used in combat during the battle of Kursk in 1943. ISU-152 had improved booking and simple cabin, which housed 152mm howitzer ML-20S. The howitzer could fire direct fire at a distance of up to 700 meters and conduct artillery fire at a distance of up to 15 km. At a distance of 1 km, shells could penetrate 120mm armor or 300mm concrete. Mass production began in September 1943. For ability to fight with German Tigers and Panthers self-propelled gun received nickname "St. John's Wort." More than 4,075 units were built during world war II and more than 5,000 after the war, the machines remained in service until the 1970s.
