Compared to the Challenger 1 MBT used during the Gulf War, the Challenger 2 has improved armor "Chobham" second generation able to withstand fire armor-piercing projectiles. The fire control system has been supplemented with the latest digital technologies. Rifled 120mm gun L30 has improved accuracy and speed of the projectile. The tank can fire armor-piercing shells, HESH shells and shells containing depleted uranium. A special modification of this tank, used in Iraq, includes additional composite and active armor, means of reducing the thermal visibility of the tank, tarpaulin "skirts" against dust and special means of communication.
