Additional Information
the Mobility of troops and supplies is one of the most important components of the military conflict, a fact that Germany recognized in the early stages of world war II. The Wehrmacht developed a large number of machines for various tasks, among which was a very successful half-track Sd.Kfz. 251. This semi-tracked vehicle became the basis of the German mechanized corps and was used throughout the war. Mass production began in 1939 and was divided into four types from Ausf.A to D. Early models used a very complex hull structure consisting of inclined armor plates. The design was somewhat simplified in subsequent modifications of C and D which facilitated mass production. The latest version of "D" emerged in 1943 and has become the most mass of four modifications. Six-cylinder engine Maybach HL42 provided a maximum speed of 53 km/h with a power reserve of 300 km. the Machine was armed with two MG42 machine guns plus automatic rifles for the crew, the passenger compartment housed twelve fully equipped soldiers. On the basis of this semi-track car created many options for self-propelled units. Total produced more than 10 000 tranporters modify the "D" and machines based on it.
