During the Second world war, the first American self-propelled howitzer on a fully tracked course was the M8. The M5 chassis, an open turret with a 75mm howitzer and a 12.7 mm m2 machine gun were used to create it. From September 1942 to January 1944, about 1800 machines were manufactured. The howitzer was first used in combat in mid-1943. As a fire support was used in Europe, Italy and the Pacific theater. Even after world war II, the M8 could be found in the French army during the Indochina war.
