Additional Information
the development Of the machine which became known as M26 Pershing was started in 1942. The tank was planned to replace the M4 Sherman, the former, at that time the standard tank of the us army. The T26E1 prototype armed with the 90mm gun M3 based on it was made the serial version of the T26E3. The first tanks of this model were sent to Europe in January 1944 and already when used in combat conditions received the designation M26. Though over 300 cars have reached the theater before the end of the war, only 20 were used in the fighting. In this limited fighting, the M26 proved to be effective against the Tigers and Panthers it was intended to fight.
Although the standard 90mm M26 Pershing gun was quite powerful, it was significantly inferior to the armament of the German "Royal Tigers". To create an equivalent to the "Pershing" was installed 90mm gun T15E1 provides a high rate of departure of the projectile. It was the first "Super Pershing" it was also sent to Europe and participated in several fights. The second "Super Pershing" was obtained by modifying the T26E3, a tank with the designation T26E4 had a t15e2 90mm gun with separate loading. These tanks were no longer sent to Europe, they were tested in the US before the creation of a serial modification, from which 25 tanks were made before the abolition of production.
