Design work began in 1942 on Archer, a self-propelled anti-tank gun designed as a stop until a complete solution was found. Installing a giant 17-pound gun on the relatively small chassis of Valentina's infantry tanker was a problem that Archer's designers met with an unusual solution - installing the gun on the front, while the combat compartment occupied the front of the car. Using armor-piercing shots, he could defeat 192 mm of armor at 914 meters, enough to pose enough of a threat to any German armor of the day. Production began in 1944, and archers were taken to the British army's armored and infantry divisions, which began using it from October.
