the Grumman TBF-1 Avenger triple torpedo bomber (Avenger) made its first flight on August 1, 1941, and entered the US Navy just in time for the battle of midway in June 1942. More than 1000 TBF/TBM (under the designation Avenger Mk I) were used by the Royal British Navy in the Atlantic and Pacific. Avenger was also used by the new Zealand Navy.
