Additional Information
In the early stages of the war, in December 1941, the Japanese A6M Zero was the dominant fighter in the Pacific, surpassing allied aircraft. Zero attempts to achieve complete air superiority were thwarted by numerous F4F Wildcat deck-based fighters. Introduced during the critical stage of the war, in 1942, the F4F Wildcat was an improved version of the Grumman's Wildcat deck fighter. This version with folding wings and six 50 caliber (12.7 mm) wing machine guns and 1,200 HP Pratt & Whitney R-1830-36 Twin Wasp engine broke the dominance of Japanese zero. Due to the robust design of the aircraft became known as "Ironworks", he could take huge damage and return to base. However, the F4F was inferior to the A6M in many ways. An impressive ratio of the enemy's downed aircraft to their own losses was achieved by experienced pilots who knew the strengths of their machine and the weaknesses of the enemy, while at some stage of the war Japan lost the most experienced pilots.
