the Hellcat F6F-3N is a modification for night operations, was introduced in late November 1943. The U.S. Navy was in dire need of a night fighter to repel Japanese raids. An important feature of the F6F, because of which it was chosen for night modification, instead of F4U - the ability to "Hellcat" to land on the swinging deck of the aircraft carrier in the dark, to which F4U was unsuitable. After some changes, Grumman introduced the F6F-3N, soon 200 aircraft were manufactured.
