Setting SU-76 created on the basis of a light tank T-70 as a mobile means of support of infantry. In front of the unit on the left was the driver, and on the right - the motor-transmission group. Fighting compartment (the cabin) installed therein 76.2-mm gun ZIS-3 was located in the rear. Initially, it was completely covered with armor, but during the modernization associated with the transition to the use of the t-70M TANK chassis, the armor roof was abandoned.
