During the second world war, the US industry produced a huge number of semi-tracked armoured personnel carriers - more than 41 thousand. Produced armored personnel carriers had approximately the same characteristics and belonged to the four main series: M2, M3, M5 and M9. Each series had several modifications. All the machines were created with the widespread use of automobile units, had a weight of 8-9 tons and a payload of about 1.5 t In their undercarriage used rubber tracks with metal fittings, track rollers of small diameter and front axle with leading and administering wheels. Semi-track armored personnel carriers have proven themselves as simple and reliable machines. Their disadvantages were insufficient cross-country terrain and poor configuration of armor protection. An armored personnel carrier with a machine gun turret ring was designated М2А1. Serial production of cars М2А1 was carried out from late 1943 to late 1944 the Firm of Wight and set 1643 Autocar half-track vehicles М2А1. In option М2А1 was modified about 5,000 previously constructed M2.
