So in 1942 year was taken decision develop on their base self-propelled-artillery installations, armed Soviet 76.2-mm guns ZIS-3 (self-propelled gun SU-76I) and 122-mm howitzers M-30 (self-propelled gun SU-122I). The su-76I self-propelled unit was developed on the basis of the German t-III tank and had the following layout: the engine and transmission compartment was at the rear, and a combat cabin with a gun installed in it was mounted in the front.
