In France and Poland, in the early stages of the Blitzkrieg, the Panzer III was crucial, although only a few hundred such machines were available. At the beginning of the invasion of the Soviet Union it was the most important tank of the German army. The first mass-produced version of Ausf.E equipped with 3.7 cm KwK 36 and three MG34 machine guns. It is since the "E" version that the torsion bar suspension has become standard, replacing the springs that were used in the earlier version. Production of the modification began in December 1938, until October 1939, 96 tanks were produced. The tank weighed 19.5 tons, much heavier than its predecessors.
