At the beginning of operation Barbarossa, the reconnaissance units of the Wehrmacht tank divisions were equipped with motorcycles and light biaxial armored vehicles Horch Sd.Kfz.222. This technique was quite suitable for use in a developed road network and temperate climate of Western Europe, to a lesser extent - for use in North Africa. In the harsh climate almost devoid of roads in the European sense of the word of the Soviet Union and motorcycles and armored vehicles were not suitable. In the winter on a motorcycle, as it turned out, the ride is simply impossible. The engines of armored vehicles were too weak to fight the Russian roads, the mobility of armored cars on rough terrain was highly limited. The Wehrmacht urgently needed a mechanized means to perform reconnaissance tasks.
