In addition to medium SD armoured personnel carriers.Kfz.251 the Wehrmacht needed a lighter machine, capable of carrying ammunition, soldiers, and towing artillery systems type 105-mm field howitzer leFH 18. For this role almost immediately was chosen armored version of the tractor-conveyor Sd.Kfz.10, serial production of which was deployed in 1938. The new vehicle received the designation Leichte Kraftwagen Gepantze (Sd.Kfz.250, Gerät 89) and own name of "Alte." Later the official name was changed to Leichte Shutzenpanzerkampfwagen, but the through index for combat vehicles remained the same. Based on armored personnel carriers lay half-track chassis type Demag D7p which were different to the shorter wheelbase, compared with the original version. Meanwhile, the design of the frame remained virtually unchanged – it was made of steel profiles reinforced with crossbars. Chassis serial numbers were in groups 95001-, 201001 - and 310001-. Wheel part was an axle automotive type with single swivel wheels dimensions 6.00х20 with pneumatic tires Continental or Michelin and suspension by transverse leaf springs per'evidnye type. The track of the front wheels was 2500 mm.
