the Development of the M3 Stuart tank began in early 1938. Subsequently, the experience of the Civil war in Spain began to show the vulnerability of tanks-precursors not only anti-tank weapons, but also conventional small arms of the infantryman. The basis was adopted on the base of the tank М2А4 "Medium" (М2А4 Medium), which was produced until 1939 in the two towers layout. Developed on 5 July 1940 on the basis of his tank received the designation light tank M3.  Since the end of March 1941, when the developed prototype was launched into the series and replaced on the m2a4 conveyor, it received its name "Stuart".
