After the success of the 15cm Sturm-Infanteriegeschutz 33 in Stalingrad, the Panzer IV developed the following Sturmpanzer for direct infantry support, especially in urban combat. The heavy gun mounted on the chassis of the medium tank heavily overloaded the car, the Sturmpanzer IV often suffered from transmission problems and had insufficient power. Production began in may 1943 and lasted until March 1945, in various versions were made more than 200 machines. The first modifications were made on the chassis Panzer IV ausf.D, ausf.E and ausf.F who came from the front for repairs. Sturnpanzer IV was used on the Eastern front, including the Kursk bulge, as well as on the Italian and Western front, where they took part in the last German offensive – the Ardennes operation.
