the Germans were not slow to verify the combat qualities of the Panhard 178. Estimated above the majority of modern armored cars and especially above SdKfz 222, they, after capture immediately received the German cross and hastily were repainted, having managed to take part even in the French campaign of 1940. Thus, one Panhard 178, called "Max", can be found in the SS division "Totenkopf", and this is not the only example of the use of these armored vehicles.

In this role, they were used without any major upgrades. For the first time, many armored vehicles were placed on the platform of armored trains (as Panzerzuge 25) and were used for exploration of paths. Then, 43 of them were equipped with railway rollers instead of conventional wheels and a frame antenna. Modernized thus AMD were also used on Balkan Railways.
