AS.42 was developed for the Italian Regio Esercito and was based on the chassis of the armored vehicle AB 41. During the fighting in North Africa increased the need for reconnaissance vehicles specially adapted to desert conditions, as driving on the sand required some design features that were not available at the time technology. Due to the special shape of the body and large tires "Sahariana" has become an ideal machine for reconnaissance and rear attacks. The machine could be equipped with several types of weapons, such as machine gun Breda 20/65 mod 1935, effective anti-tank gun 47/32 and 20 mm anti-tank gun Solothurn.
